Apparently I accidentally signed up for a science class with this one. 😭 For awhile I did not know the majority of the words meant and I still don't!
The beginning especially took me a while to get through because there was SO much science and explaining, and I wasn’t immediately hooked by the story. But once everything started coming together and the actual mission picked up, I got way more invested.
And then we got ROCKY.
Rocky was easily one of my favorite parts of this book. His friendship with Ryland was so cute and also genuinely hilarious. I loved watching them slowly figure out how to communicate with each other and work together despite literally being from completely different planets. and Rockey's "Amaze, amaze, amaze." Or, "Fist my bump."
Like OK Rockey!
The humor throughout the book was also SO GOOD. there were so many moments that genuinely made me laugh. It helped balance out all the science and made me want to keep reading so much more.
I also have to give Andy Weir credit because even though 75% of the science I didn't understand, I don't even want to think about how much studying he had to do about the names and how this stuff works.
Overall, I’m really glad I stuck with it. It definitely wasn’t an immediate five-star obsession for me, and I probably could have survived with 75% less science 😭, but once I got into the actual story, I had such a good time.
And finally…
WHAT IN THE MEBURGER. 💀
